The traditional August donkey race in Tribunj is an event whitnessed by thousands of viewers. This small place near Vodice pays respect to donkey - a stubborn but diligent animal in the absence of which the life in the old Dalmatia would have been impossible. About 50 years ago a group of students organised the first local donkey race, and since then this event has grown into a big festivity. In the races the locals dressed in traditional national costumes ride the donkeys, and whose donkey comes in first, wins. The race takes place in the streets of Tribunj, which gives viewers the opportunity to be in a direct contact with the contestants. The contest is followed by the traditional party in the streets. It is the association Hrvatski tovar (Croatian Donkey) that organizes the races. The same association takes credit for the organization of the world's first donkey reserve on the island of Logorun. You can arrive there sailing in a boat, and the local donkeys are very tame and sociable and simply adore another Dalmatian specialty – dry figs.
