Diving
Thanks to an amiable climate and a clean sea, diving is one of the most popular sports on the Adriatic coast. Since many sea battles took place in this part of the Mediterranean, there are a lot of sunken ships at the bottom of the sea that will offer a unique experience to tadiver, together with the natural beauties and the articulated coast. The average sea-surface temperature during summer is 26°C (78.8F), and at a depth of 20-30 m it is 17°C (62.6F), which makes the Adriatic sea very suitable for a longer underwater sojourn. The sea next to the shore is unpolluted, and considering that the urbanization level is still low, you can easily come across intact isles or reefs hiding unexplored beauty and wealth of nature. In most of bigger towns divers will find diving centers or shops with top-quality equipment, and the beginners courses are organized constantly, guided by specialised staff. The favourite underwater exploration sites are sea reefs, ship and plane carcasses from the past wars and sea caves, and since the Adriatic seafloor is by composition a karstic soil, it is filled with holes, gaps and caves still waiting to be explored. Apart for its beauties of nature the Adriatic sea is also famous for its rich flora and fauna hiding under the surface, that become ever more subject to underwater photo safaris. The seabed of Istria is famous for its ship carcasses, and the area around Zadar is visited primarily for the beauty of the islands, reefs, seawalls and its rich biological community. Since the sea around Telašćica Nature Park and the National Park of Kornati is specially protected, in order for you to dive there you must get a separate diving licence. The Blue Cave (Modra Špilja) on the island of Biševo will leave all of its visitors absolutely breathless, as will the islands of Mljet and Lastovo, whose seafloors are yet unexplored. Mljet is interesting because of its vicinity to the largest sea reef on the Mediterranean.
