Zagorje

Hrvatsko Zagorje region is set on the north of Croatia, between Slovenian borders, and rivers Sava and Sutla.

200 thousands of inhabitants occupy this hilly area, known after medicinal herbs, old castles and good wine. Zagorje is easily accessible by car or by bus, while speedways and railway enable easy access to Zagreb and border crossing.

Green areas, lakes, rivers and romantic castle are just a portion of tourist offer exciting the visitors. They spend time in one of many spas in this region, out of which the most famous are Varaždinske, Stubičke, Krapinske and Tuheljske toplice.

Varaždinske toplice have more than 1000 beds and offer versatile anti-stress and fitness programmes, treatment of rheumatic diseases and various relaxing therapies. During your stay you can use whole infrastructure while the top experts are at your disposal at any time.

Stubičke toplice are close to Zagreb, more precisely beneath Medvednica Mountain. Temperature of thermal springs is between 40°C to 60°C, available throughout the whole year in closed and semi-closed pools. Conferences are often held here, and the Special hospital for medical rehabilitation will provide a pleasant treatment.

Therapeutic effects of Krapinske toplice have been known since 18th century when the first bathing resort was build. Krapinske toplice since then became a high-quality treatment and rehabilitation centre. The bathing season is opened the whole year because of the interior swimming pools and high water temperature. The guests can use many sport courts and enjoy in fine foods and natural beauties.

Terme Tuhelj is among the most popular spas in Northern Croatia. This spa is specific due to its therapeutic mud, virgin nature and well equipped sports courts. Situated only 40 kilometers from Zagreb it is very popular recreational centre and excursion site for the city folks.

Zagorje, i.e. the County of Krapina and Zagorje is the most densely inhabited region in Croatia, with urban centres of Krapina, Zabok and Zlatar.

Krapina is the administrative centre of the County and a fortified town established in 12th century. The evidence about human existence in this area in Paleolithic era was found in 1899. On the hill Hušnjakovo brdo in Krapina many fossilized human and ancient animal bones of different age, some of them as 130 years old were found. These valuable findings and reconstruction of Neanderthal life can be seen in the museum of Krapina.

Zabok is a traffic centre connecting Zagreb, Krapina and Varaždin. Its distinguishing point so far was industry, but it has been gradually turning into a university town, already having several schools.

One of the locations also worth of mentioning is Marija Bistrica – a well known place of Our Lady worship whose statute in this place has been said to have many miraculous properties. Covenant baroque church of Our Lady of Jerusalem has valuable icons and is a place daily visited by many pilgrims.

Kumrovec is known after an outdoor ethno village where you can taste a typical way of life in Zagorje. It is also known as a birth place of Josip Broz Tito, whose house is also opened for public.

Veliki tabor is protected as UNESCO’s monument of the highest category and is one of the prettiest Croatian castles. It is built on a hill that, according to legend was once an island in the sea of Pannonia. The castle has several valuables collections (arms, vehicles, pictures), and as you browse through its many corridors you will hear legends spoken in this region for centuries.
