Umag

Located in northern Istria near the border of Slovenia, and 40km from Trieste, this small town has 5000 inhabitants and is host to the ATP tournament. Traces of civilisation in this area originate from the Roman times, and there are also a number of valuable buildings from Baroque and Classical times.

The centre of the old town is on a peninsula and there are stones of great archaeological value from antique times in the town’s tower. Amongst the buildings, the Church of St Mary is notable because of its gothic style, which was also developed during Baroque and Classical times. As a tennis centre, Umag offers its visitors a variety of recreational activities.

First of all there are the tennis courts, as well as the 12 cycle paths, hiking paths and caves, panoramic flights, horse riding and water sports. After one’s sporting activities the best relaxation can be found in one of the wellness centres.

There are art galleries in the town, and concerts, but the most well known event is the International Festival of Chamber Theatre ‘The Golden Lion’ in July. There is also the Organum Histriae project, which is dedicated to revitalising organ music in Istria.

You can find accommodation in one of the hotels, apartments or private houses, and sailors can moor their boats in the ACI marina.
