Ugljan

The Zadar channel separates Ugljan from Zadar, and from a birds eye perspective the entire island is covered by green – pine woods, low lying undergrowth, figs and olive trees. Only the northeastern side of the island is inhabited, and the larger villages are Kukljica, Kali, Preko and Ugljan. The cliffs make the southern side inaccessible, and their base is a paradise for lovers of underwater sports. The clean sea and air, the untouched nature, as well as more than 2500 hours of annual sunshine are very good reasons to make a visit to Ugljan. In the past, this island was a favourite destination for the noble families of Zadar and still today there are buildings from these elegant times.

Ugljan is the largest village with a long beach and it has a very strong tradition of tourism. It is possible to find accommodation in the hotel, in the campsite, or in on the villas or private apartments.

Preko is the port directly opposite Zadar and is at the same time the administrative centre of the island. Generally, Preko is the first contact that visitors will have with Ugljan because this is where the ferry from Zadar embarks. There are a number of pretty beaches that are surrounded by pine forests in the village, and both the sea and the air currents allow for a lot of fun with surfing, sailing, water skiing and diving.

Kukljica is located on the southern end of the island and is a well-developed tourist centre on the island of Ugljan. The nearby passage of Ždrelac leads all the way to the National Park of Kornati and the Nature Park of Telašćica, and outings to these destinations are organized in Kukljica itself.

Kali is one of the most well known fishing villages in the Adriatic. Traces of life in this area still exist from pre-history, as well as from the Antique and Middle Ages. The inhabitants strictly keep to their traditions, and pass them down from generation to generation. They are, as a result, excellent fisherman and are particularly oriented towards blue fish and shellfish.

The fortress of Sveti Mihovil on Ugljan has been declared as having the most beautiful panoramic view in the Adriatic. Although it is only at a point of 256 metres above sea level, this fortress offers the most magnificent views of the entire Zadar archipelago, Velebit and the National Park of Kornati.
