Lowlands of Croatia belong to large Pannonia plane and have a long tradition in agriculture. Slavonija is surrounded by three rivers: Drava, Sava and Danube, hence has a developed freshwater fishery, while hunting is a favourite past time and recreation in thick oak forests.
The town of Osijek is situated on the Drava's banks. It is administrative and cultural centre of the region. It is a town built in Vienna style, full of parks and promenades, dominated by an impressive neo-gothic cathedral. Osijek is founded on the remains of the ancient Roman settlement Mursa. Tvrđa (the old town centre), city hall and university buildings are architectural tourist attraction and sights you should pay attention to. You can travel to Osijek by state roads, railway and plane. Accommodation is available in hotels, motels and private resorts.
Other bigger centres are Vukovar, Vukovar, Slavonski brod, Požega, Daruvar, Nova Gradiška, Kutjevo, Županja, Đakovo, Našice i Virovitica.
Požega is a small town with rich history. Today it is a strong centre of food industry. Every autumn Požega hosts a very popular music festival ''Zlatne žice Slavonije'' (Golden Strings of Slavonija).
Vinkovci are situated on the banks of the Bosut River, and is one of the Slavonian towns with ample folklore tradition. A festivity called Vinkovačke jeseni (Autumns of Vinkovci) is a 40 years old festival which hosts folklore ensemble performances, traditional customs and products.
Vukovar is known as the town that went through catastrophic devastation in the Homeland War. It is still going through reconstruction process, which is progressing every day. There are already several hotels opened in the city, excursions on the Danube are very popular and the town has been developing a congressional tourism.
Đakovo is famous for one of the prettiest cathedrals in South-eastern Europe. Red bricks make this building very unique, but the ambience is complemented by romantic promenades surrounding it. One should by no means avoid Kopački rit and Papuk, natural resorts of Slavonija.
Kopački rit is a nature park near Osijek, a home to 260 bird species, with plentiful wildlife and fish. This is one of the best preserved marsh areas in Europe whose specificities attract numerous visitors and scientist as well.
Papuk is a hill north of Požega, a favourite destination for hikers and nature lovers. It became a nature park in 1999 because of its natural wealth and beauty.
