Senj

Senj is well known for the wind ‘bura’ that comes down from the Velebit at speeds of over 150km/h, and cools down the entire bay of Kvarner. Built in the 16th century the fortress Nehaj is the town’s symbol, and served in its defence from the Turks and Venetians. 6000 people live in the town, and its covers a coastal area of 60km, which is mainly made up of small bays and beaches that are great for swimming.

Senj was famous even in the time of Illyrians and Romans under the name of Senia, but its historical peak was when it was a base for the Uskoks – local inhabitants who fought against the Turks. You can find out more about this in the town’s museum.

Senj is the closest swimming destination from Zagreb being 165km away from the Croatian metropolis. The National Park of Plitvice is 90km away and Zadar 154 km away.

Due to its historical position the town is fortified by walls, the streets are narrow, and the houses are compact. The people of Senj have always been know for being brave, hardy people, which has earned them the respect of their enemies throughout the Adriatic. Today the town is a kindly summer resort, where the inhabitants of the coastal areas and Krk meet up in the port and small shopping centre.

As well as the town’s swimming area, you can make a stop in any of the bays, open your deck chair and take pleasure in the tranquillity and the clean sea. On the road from Senj towards the south there is a series of small villages: Sv. Juraj, Lukovo, Starigrad, Jablanac, Prizna... and besides Starigrad, which is the ferry port for Rab, all these other little places are totally dedicated to tourists and their holidays. In addition to a number of hotels, you can stay in private households and camps. The beautiful long bay of Zavratnica, a natural fjord that is one of its kind in Croatia, is located near Jablanac.

The Senj summer carnival is held in August, which is an event you should not miss. Amongst the fun events there is a traditional bicycle race, indoor football and basketball tournaments, a sailing regatta and a music festival. If you want a quiet holiday in a small town, then Senj is the right place for you!
