Pula

This is the largest town in Istria, and before it became the business and cultural centre of the Istrian county, it used to be a huge Roman colony, followed by the largest naval port of Austria. It has well-developed ship yards, as well as textile, glass and building material industries.

Pula is best known for its well-preserved Antique buildings, of which we highlight the Amphitheatre - the popular arena. Constructed in the first century, it was built at the same time a Roman Coliseum. It is filled with events during the summer, such as the film festival and concerts given by world famous music stars. As well, in the under ground area there is an exhibition space. One of the most beautiful monuments in Pula is the Triumphal Arch of the Sergi, and the Temple of Augustus from the first century has also been well preserved. In the field of gastronomy, Pula is one of Croatia’s favourite spots.

Today’s restaurants are famous for their excellent fish specialities as well as foods with local significance – such as truffles.Pula is not a typical tourist place on the Croatian coast, since in addition to its narrow streets, the city offers all the comforts and services that the modern tourist requires. From Pula, it is very easy to get to the National Park of Brijuni, whose islands have been a favourite destination for the world’s jet set for decades. The picturesque natural surroundings and remains of a Roman temple are the best reasons to go there for a day trip.

There are fifteen hotels and four auto-camps in Pula, where the majority of the accommodation for tourists is located on the coast outside of the town and surrounded by dense forest. All the buildings have additional facilities such as sports halls, discos, and restaurants. The hotels are designed to hold large congress meetings and there is an international airport near the city.

Just in the city alone there are two marinas, and therefore nautical tourism is growing all the time. Tourist agencies offer a wide variety of day trips throughout the Istrian region – from excursions to the interior of the peninsula to visit local farms to boat trips to the surrounding coast and islands.

Due to the number of top specialist doctor’s surgeries, and also the high quality sports grounds, the town is a favourite destination for sports people for their preparations.
