Poreč

Poreč is situated on the west coast of Istria, and has been a traditional tourist centre for the last 160 years. It is a favourite with visitors because of its clean beaches, and the numerous little islands that are close to the city port. The largest and most beautiful island is St Nicholas, where one of the oldest lighthouses [built in 1402] on the Adriatic coast can found. The town is surrounded by coastal woods and cypress trees, and filled with the scents of Mediterranean vegetation. The gentle climate and well-kept beaches are good reasons to stay here for longer.

The entire centre of the old town is a cultural monument. It has kept its ancient Roman street outline, and a number of historical buildings (defensive towers, gothic palaces) have been preserved.

The building with the greatest historical value is the Euphrasius' Basilica, dating from the 5th century, whose interior is decorated by a unique mosaic. The entire complex is under the protection of UNESCO.

There are lots of galleries and museums, as well as jazz and classical music concerts. The numerous street art performers also enhance the cultural program. In addition to the culture and beautiful beaches, the available sporting activities are important to the majority of visitors. Poreč can be pleased with being able to offer over 70 types of sport, and sports programs. Favourites are tennis, fitness, horse riding, water skiing, sailing and diving. Evidence of the quality of Poreč’s offer is found in the fact that it has a long tradition of providing fitness preparation for professional sports persons, as well as for hobbyists. In nearby Vrsar, there is the local airport Crljenka that provides panoramic flights over Istria.

After a tiring day, the best way to relax is in one of the comfortable restaurants and inns that provide tasty Istrian specialities. For those who want nightlife, Poreč offers a variety of discos and bars.

Today there are thirty hotels in the town and its outskirts alone, as well as 13 campsites (amongst which there are nudist camps), 16 apartment villages, and a wide variety of family accommodation. The inhabitants, 17000 in total, are experts in wine production, olive and fruit growing, and of course, tourism.

For years Poreč has been at the top of Croatian tourism, and the town showcases are full of prizes and honours awarded for the quality of its tourist offer. This is an excellent sign for all those who want to have an idyllic holiday in top quality facilities.
