The island of Vis was founded under the name of Issa during the time of the ancient Greeks. Due to its maritime position it has been a strategically important point for many armies, and it was only totally opened up for tourists in the 90’s of the last century. As a result of these restrictions, tourism has only now begun to develop in the real sense, and up until this point its inhabitants have engaged in fishing and the production of wine. There are ten villages on the island, where the largest are Vis and Komiža.
The town of Vis is on the north-eastern coast of the island, and is the only settlement that is connected to the coast (ferries and catamarans come from Split and Italy). The transport connections on the entire island, as well as in the town of Vis, are not very developed and therefore there are not many cars, which makes the surroundings peaceful and clean. However, the excellent lay out of all the important buildings (with a maximum distance of 500m) results in cars being totally unnecessary. You can find accommodation in rooms or apartments, which are adequately equipped for the most different needs. In the town itself and its surroundings there are a number of pretty sandy beaches, and the aroma of the plants that grow in this area give a special atmosphere to the holiday.
Komiža is a fishing village located on the foothills of the Hum peak. Typical scenes here are the pretty pebble beaches and the aromatic plants. Komiža is also recognized because of the Falkuši – an indigenous type of Croatian boat. The coast in front of Komiža is very indented, and there are frequent trips to the nearby islands, especially Biševo and Jabuka. Biševo is famous for its Blue Cave, where the sunlight refracts and offers an unforgettable experience. The island of Jabuka is in fact made of black volcanic rock and is 97 metres high, and is distinctive for its extremely rich fish life. In terms of entertainment on Vis, we recommend all forms of water sports, paragliding, visits to the many caves and historical sites, as well as the enjoyable concerts that are held throughout the summer cultural season.
