Due to its geological characteristics, and also because of its reputation Susak is an island that is unique in Croatia and in the rest of the world. It is covered by thick layers of sand that rest on a stone slab. The only settlement on the island is divided up into the new part and the old part, which are connected by 150 steps. Its inhabitants are famous for their viticulture and fishing, and their ancient Croatian dialect is distinct.
You can reach the island via catamaran from Rijeka, or by ferry from Lošinj. The welcoming hosts will provide you with accommodation. The island covers a surface area 3.5 km², its beaches are pebbly and sandy, and the houses are built in an old style from natural materials. There are only a few new buildings, and these are from the Austro-Hungarian period. The soil configuration and climate makes it ideal for the growth of Mediterranean plants, and on some parts of the island you can pick blackberries and a variety of grassy plants.
Just as with nearby Unije, Susak has no cars and the regular ferry line from Lošinj provides the best contact with civilization. In terms of interesting buildings, it is worth mentioning the parish church of St Nicholas and the graveyard, which is distinct because of the white colour which prevails over the memorials. The lighthouse from the 19th century still works today, and is one of the rare few which are still inhabited. The lighthouse keeper is available for you to make a visit to the lighthouse.
Susak has two more distinct features – good wine, where you can choose between Tojinščina, Muscat, and Cabernet Sauvignon; and its beaches. The sandy surface of this island has a legendary power for healing infertility, and the wish of many couples to have children has been granted after their visit to the island of Susak.
