Island Hvar

According to a range of criteria, Hvar has been voted one of the most beautiful islands in the world. It is the longest Adriatic island and the fourth largest. With up to 2715 hours of annual sunshine, Hvar has been officially proclaimed the sunniest place in Europe, and there is an interesting rule that states visits to Hvar are free on snowy days. Its inhabitants’ predominately engage in tourism, viticulture and the cultivation of lavender and rosemary. The ferry from Split comes to the island, and docks in Stari Grad, Jelsa, Sućuraj and the town of Hvar. The other villages are connected by bus.

The town of Hvar is fortified by walls from the 15th century, and Arsenal is on the main town square – one of the first theatres in Europe, which still works today. The magnificent cathedral of St Stephen dominates the town, as well as the gallery of contemporary arts, the Franciscan monastery and numerous old villas that are visited by lots of visitors.

The Pakleni islands are located just in front of the town, and are a popular spot for day trips. They have a campsite and a nudist beach. Due to their interesting shape and challenging straits they are also a favourite place for sailors. Accommodation in Hvar is varied – in addition to the numerous hotels, there is also private accommodation, apartments, houses and villas available. In recent times, the wide choice of night clubs and discos has made the town of Hvar a favourite meeting place for the jet set and for all those who want a luxurious party.

In past times Stari Grad was the maritime centre of the island, and in the present day its inhabitants mainly engage with tourism and fishing. It was founded in the 4th century before Christ, and nowadays is mainly dominated by Baroque and Renaissance architecture from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Jelsa is the only place on the island with fresh water springs, and therefore its vegetation is different from the rest of the island. The numerous tidy bays make Jelsa a favourite place for relaxation. Accommodation is available in hotels, campsites, apartments and rooms, and like Hvar, Jelsa also offers a variety of forms of amusement for all generations.

Vrboska has a marina with one hundred moorings, and the church-fortress of St Mary built in the 16th century.

Sućuraj is located on the eastern edge of Hvar and is only 6 kilometres away from the main land. The small romantic bays and impressive views on the Makarska Riviera are only a few of the reasons why you should visit Sućuraj. In terms of recreational activities on Hvar, there are a variety of sporting activities, trips and cultural events on offer. On the island there is also a safari park, as well as sailing, diving and tennis clubs.
