The tourist heritage of Novi Vinodolski started long ago in 1878, which ranks it on the same level as the pioneer of tourism, Opatija. The old town centre is recognisable with its white buildings and red roofs, and it has preserved Roman walls, the remains of a monastery, a Frankopan castle, a homeland museum and a gallery.
Novi Vinodolski has an important place in Croatian history, since it was here in 1288 that the ‘Vinodol code’ was written, the oldest complete cultural monument in the Croatian language. The town is especially attractive during the time of the summer carnival, when visitors have the chance to become familiar with traditional local customs such as the ‘Wheel dance of Novi’. This is a dance where hundred of dancers celebrate the old noble families of Zrinski and Frankopan.
The economy of Novi Vinodolski is based on tourism – and as a result there are no large industries or pollution. The hotels, camps, apartments and tourist villages offer accommodation for up to 10000 guests. As well as the crystal clear sea, there are swimming pools, saunas and other leisure facilities such as sports grounds.
Its proximity to the main roads in Croatia allows visitors to make trips to the other tourist resorts in the region, just as much to places on the mainland as to places on the islands.
