NP Paklenica

Paklenica is one of two national parks (next to Sjeverni Velebit) set on the Velebit mountain. It is situated between Karlobag and Zadar. Its size is 96 km², and it has been established in 1949. The Park is the most easily accessible from Starigrad, a small town on Adriatic speed-way, where most of the Park’s visitors reside.

Paklenica consists of two canyons; Velika Paklenica (Big Paklenica) with rocks stretching up to 400 meters with a small stream running through, and Mala Paklenica (Small Paklenica) whose crass edifices are not less interesting. Almost two thirds of Paklenica are covered with pine and beech, while the rest is barren rocks. There are 40 endemic species and the woods are inhabited by bears, boars, deer and rabbits. Griffon Vulture also resides in this region. The hiking tracks are over 150 kilometers longs which makes Paklenica number one destination for hikers. Its natural obstacles and quality of service put it on the top of the European hiking places.

This Park is a favourable location because the proximity of the sea and it is easy to descent to some of the Adriatic beaches beneath Velebit.100,000 of nature lovers and extreme sport fans visit Paklenica every year. This itself should stand as an invitation to all curious people to come and see the beauty of this National Park.
