Lika is a mountain part of Croatia and its geographical positions follows the movement of the mountain Velebit. Whole Lika is mountainous, with thick forests, couple fertile valleys and underground rivers.The region is scarcely inhabited; larger towns are Gospić and Otočac.
Otočac is situated in Gacka valley, beautiful scenery through which the river Gacka wriggles. When you go around this region you can still see mills grinding corn and get to know the traditional fabric washing in the river. Gacka River offers a specific experience for all fishermen because of its abundance in trout and other fish. A breathtaking sight is to see the Gacka valley bathed by sunbeams reflecting in the river at a dawn from the top of one of the surrounding hills.
In those hills there is Kuterevo, the village sanctuary for bears. Enthusiasm of local inhabitants already helped saving couple of young orphan bears and today is on a path to become a prototype of a natural zoo.Administrative center of Lika-Senj county
Gospić is situated in the south. Gospić has healed its war wounds and today it is a beautiful small town with cozy accommodation, sport courts and various sorts of fun. Nearby Gospić is the village Smiljan, a birthplace of Nikola Tesla, famous inventor.
There are many caves nearby, one specifically worth of mentioning is the cave Samograd past Perušića. Perušić is famous for its very well preserved Turkish 16th century tower. There is an ethnographic museum illustrating the life of an average family in Lika in the town.Winters in Lika are cold and snowy. But in summer, the nature blossoms and mountain climate makes it possible to enjoy nature without exhausting heats. Summer is an ideal time to visit National Parks North Velebit, Plitvička jezera and Paklenica.
