Kaštela

The town of Kaštela is situated to the north of Split, in the gulf of Kašteli. It is made up of a series of seven villages that extend in a row between Split and Trogir, along 17 kilometres of the Adriatic highway. In order they are: Sućurac, Gomilica, Kambelovac, Lukšić, Stari, Novi and Štafilić. Until not so long ago Kaštela was known mainly for its industry, but in recent times the inhabitants have invested a lot into tourism and every year more and more visitors are coming to stay. Accommodation is available in a number of excellent hotels, numerous apartments and villas, as well as campsites.

Kaštel Sućurac is the most eastern village and today has still got walls preserved from the 16th century that protect its inhabitants from invaders. Gomilica is built in a Romantic style, and is known today for its sandy beaches that are especially suitable for children. Two brothers from the Split noble family Cambi established Kambelovac when they built a castle in the 15th century. Today Kambelovac has pretty beaches, and is the starting point for mountain hikes on the nearby peak of Kozjak. Kaštel Lukšić is the cultural centre of Kaštel, and the majority of cultural events are held here. There is a beautiful park full of Mediterranean plants in Lukšić, and it also has pretty pebble beaches. Kaštel Stari, which has been around since the 15th century, has a castle, which is a combination between a court and a palace. There are numerous archaeological sites nearby, and a number of mountain paths lead from the nearby peak. In Kaštel Novi they still grow centuries old grape varieties. A few years ago in Novi a biblical garden was opened, in honour of Pope John Paul II’s visit. The plan of the founders of the garden is to plant all the plants that are mentioned in the bible. Finally, there is Kaštel Štafilić. It offers the most beautiful beaches in Kaštela and the old olive tree is a special attraction – a natural monument that is over 1500 years old. The oil produced from this indigenous tree is a souvenir of Kaštela. Recreation in Kaštela includes water and team sports, tennis and outings.

Kaštela is a great choice for families with children who will enjoy the safe pretty beaches, and considering the proximity of Split it is also great for those who want a city break.
