Hum

One of the associations for Hum is that it is “the smallest town in the world”. With its twenty inhabitants, Hum has been alive since ancient times, where the large walls and town door guard the town from the influence of modern times. Located on the top of a hill it is approached by a meandering road called the Alley of Glagols. Within its walls it is possible to see the influence of Byzantine artistry, and the centre has a church where valuable pictures and a collection of collages are kept.

Hum is the centre of Glaglothics (old Croatian script) and it is the best place to start any research about literacy in this area. The alley of Glagols, which follows the road to Hum, has a series of stone monuments that are dedicated to the history of Glagolithics.

Although small, Hum is able to accommodate guests in local households. Asides from events connected to the Glagolithic scrip, the town holds the interesting event ‘Choosing the district prefect’ in June. In this festival they ceremoniously open the town doors, folk festival dance groups from the whole of Istria gather, and according to ancient tradition they choose the District Prefect. After the ceremony, they celebrate for the entire night alongside home made cheese and Istrian rakija – biska [made of mistletoe]
