Gorski kotar (highlands) is a forest area on the way from Zagreb to Rijeka. Untouched nature; rich wildlife and proximity of larger towns made this region a top choice for short vacations and small escapades into nature. The most famous natural resort in Lokve is the Omladinsko Lake, nearby cave Lokvarka and Park Forest Golubinjak. There are many toads around Lokve which are, as expected, included in gastronomic offer. One of the events in relation to toads is so called Žabarska noć (Toad night) - a contest in toad jumping.

Čabar is a cultural centre in Gorski kotar dominated by Petar Zrinski fortress. Čabar is starting point for excursions to National Park Risnjak, mountain Snježnik, Kupa and Čabranka river springs.

Ogulin is a town situated at the border between Gorski kotar and region of Karlovac. It is protected by Velika kapela and has beautiful surroundings for which a visitor would need couple of days to see.

Bjelolasica is a 1534 m high mountain. Croatian Olympic Centre is located on the top of Bjelolasica. This is a designated location for many professional international athletes, but its resources are available for public and recreational purposes. Bjelolasica hosts team building activities and has facilities for congressional tourism. Bijele and Samarske rocks are protected natural reservation, which are next to mountain Klek very popular among alpinists and adventurers.
